Why am I being constantly overlooked for promotion?

Writer: Gemma RabbiniGemma Rabbini

Oh it’s frustrating!!! You feel like you’ve done ALL the things – the overtime, the volunteering for extra responsibilities, organised the team day, whined to your friends at lunch / over Slack that you’re wanting to move on, maybe even applied for a few roles, but NOTHING!!! Have a look at the list below to identify where you could have a blind spot in your career promotion prospects.

  1. Lack of Visibility / Poor Self Promotion: Your achievements and potential may not be widely known within the company or by key decision-makers.

  2. No Strong Advocate: You might lack a mentor or sponsor within the organization who can champion your promotion.

  3. Skills Mismatch: You may excel in your current role, but your skills might not align with what's needed for the next level.

  4. Inadequate Soft Skills: While your technical skills may be strong, you might lack the interpersonal or leadership skills required for the next role.

  5. Negative Perception: There could be a perception that you're not ready for more responsibility, perhaps due to past mistakes or how you handle stress.

  6. Office Politics: You may not be navigating office politics effectively, leading to others being favoured for promotion.

  7. Lack of Long-Term Vision: You might not be demonstrating a commitment to the company’s long-term goals or showing how you fit into the bigger picture.

  8. Failure to Network: Building relationships with colleagues and higher-ups can be crucial for being noticed for promotion. Go with a colleague. Pitching yourself can feel uncomfortable but there are courses that can help.

  9. Unclear Career Goals: If you haven’t clearly communicated your career aspirations, your manager might not even know you want a promotion.

  10. Timing Issues: The organization may not currently have a suitable role available, or you may not have been in your current role long enough.

  11. Undervalued Role: Your current position might be undervalued or not seen as a stepping stone to higher roles.

  12. Lack of Continuous Learning: Not actively pursuing further education, coaching, training, or certifications can make you less competitive for promotion.

  13. Feedback Ignored: If you’re not acting on constructive feedback or showing improvement in areas of weakness, this could hold you back.

  14. Perceived Lack of Leadership: You may not be demonstrating the leadership qualities that higher-ups are looking for in a promoted individual. Career coaching for leadership can help identify and work on any blind spots.

  15. Unhealthy Work-Life Balance: If you're burning out, working long hours or consistently stressed, this may raise concerns about your ability to handle a more demanding role.

  16. Company Culture Misalignment: If your work style or values don’t align with the company’s culture, it might be holding you back from advancement.

Make a cup of tea and have an honest look at the areas above and identify one or two to really work on.
